Our fleet

Our H145 helicopters, G-YAAC and G-YOAA, are based between our two airbases, Nostell Air Support Unit near Wakefield in West Yorkshire and RAF Topcliffe near Thirsk in North Yorkshire.

Our air ambulance helicopters are state-of-the-art, built and supplied by Airbus Helicopters and the bespoke interior was fitted out by Bucher to accommodate the needs of our crews. They cost approximately £6 million pounds each and have been funded by the generosity of the public, through generous grant funding, and the sale of our previous two helicopters.

Nostell Air Support Unit

After outgrowing our space at Leeds Bradford Airport in December 2011, we acquired our airbase on the grounds of Nostell Priory near Wakefield. Lord St Oswald, the owner of the estate, has been a long-time friend of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and had heard that we were looking for a new space. He had a vacant sizable warehouse and office space which had plenty of grounds to the rear of the property on the edge of his estate and offered his support. Our first flight from Nostell took place on 28th November 2013.

Facilities at Nostell include office space and board room, a hangar, our own independent fuel bowser, and our dedicated Air Desk & Operations room. In 2019 we also opened our own state-of-the-art simulation training suite equipped with the latest technology and realistic manikins to provide immersive training experiences for our crew.

One visitor from the Civil Aviation Authority intimated that we have one of the best air ambulance facilities in the UK – something we are extremely proud of.

Topcliffe Air Support Unit

Our Airbase in the North of the region is located at RAF Topcliffe near Thirsk. Located within the Alanbrooke Barracks of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, it is an ideal place for one of the YAA helicopters to be located.

We started our operations at Topcliffe at the beginning of January 2012. We cannot thank the Group Captain and his staff at RAF Linton-on-Ouse enough for their help and support in allowing us to create our second airbase on their own base at Topcliffe.

We would also like to thank our neighbours on the Alanbrooke Barracks and the Lieutenant Colonel and his staff for making us welcome.

Facilities at Topcliffe include office space, a hangar, our own independent fuel bowser, space close to the runway for rapid dispatch, and dedicated crew accommodation on site. Since moving to Topcliffe we have seen a significant increase in incidents we are attending in the northern and coastal parts of Yorkshire.

Take a tour of our air ambulance helicopters and see what our Pilot, Garry Brasher, and Paramedic, Tony Wilkes think of them.
