Linocut and watercolour artwork by local Yorkshire artist and former YAA alumni, Helen Callear.
“The ‘Three Little Birds’ design grew from my desire to incorporate the aircraft itself into the story as the third bird. This piece began as an original linocut, carved entirely by hand from my own drawing. After transferring the sketch onto the blank lino, I spent many patient hours cutting away the negative space with my carving tools, slowly revealing the image in relief. Once printed, I hand finished the piece in watercolour.
This work is deeply personal to me. It reflects my respect and admiration for the Charity I was fortunate enough to work with for eleven years. Hearing the aircraft fly overhead has always felt bittersweet – someone’s day has taken an unexpected turn, yet help is already on its way. Creating this design for the Charity fills me with immense pride, and I hope the piece captures both the tenderness and the strength behind the work they do”.
