How Payroll Giving keeps Yorkshire covered from payslip to patient

Covering a region of more than five million people, Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity operates 365 days a year, responding to emergencies across cities, towns and rural communities throughout Yorkshire.

As an independent Charity, the service relies entirely on public support to remain operational. This February is Payroll Giving Month, providing an opportunity to highlight Payroll Giving as one of the ways supporters help make that possible.

Payroll Giving allows you to donate directly from your salary before tax is deducted, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to support a cause you care about. Because your donation comes from your gross pay, you receive immediate tax relief, meaning a £10 donation could cost as little as £8 for a standard rate taxpayer, or even less for higher rate taxpayers. It’s a simple way to make your support go further without increasing the impact on your take-home pay.

It is also designed to be easy and flexible. Once set up through your employer’s payroll department, your donation is made each payday automatically, removing the need to remember monthly payments. You remain in full control, with the ability to increase, decrease or stop your donation at any time. Some employers may also choose to match employee donations, allowing your support to have an even greater impact at no additional cost to you.

Unlike one-off donations, this simple, tax-efficient way of giving provides regular, dependable support that helps Yorkshire Air Ambulance plan with confidence. It helps cover the immediate costs of daily operations, including fuel, aircraft maintenance, clinical supplies, and the specialist medical and aviation equipment our crews rely on to deliver critical care.

At the same time, this stability allows the Charity to make major, long-term investments, from introducing three new, state-of-the-art H145 D3 helicopters in recent years to progressing plans for a new air base that will support future generations of patients across Yorkshire.

Employers also play an important role in supporting Payroll Giving. By offering the scheme, organisations can demonstrate their commitment to supporting local communities and provide employees with a simple and meaningful way to contribute to a lifesaving service that operates on their doorstep.

Every mission Yorkshire Air Ambulance attends is only made possible by the continued support of donors. Payroll Giving transforms a small part of your monthly salary into action that helps sustain a service thousands of people rely on each year, often without ever knowing they will need it.
