Building the Future of Livesaving Care in Yorkshire

Yorkshire Air Ambulance is proud to announce plans for a new, purpose-built Northern Air Support Unit at Skipton on Swale, a major milestone in our mission to deliver outstanding pre-hospital emergency care across Yorkshire.

Following years of careful planning and collaboration, we have secured a site just 3.5 miles from our current base at RAF Topcliffe. This new airbase will reflect the exceptional facilities of our Nostell Air Support Unit and give us a permanent home in the North of the region.

  • The future of our current base is uncertain, which is a concern to us. We need to ensure our future in this part of the region to maintain continuity and stability for our critical care service.
  • A permanent, YAA-owned base will provide greater long-term security, operational flexibility and service resilience.
  • We’ve outgrown our current facilities at RAF Topcliffe, which we’ve operated from for over a decade as tenants.
  • The purpose-built design will improve working conditions and support our crews’ wellbeing and training.
  • With your support, we can create a world-class base ready to meet Yorkshire’s future emergency needs.

From preserving our reach across Yorkshire to enhancing crew wellbeing, this development strengthens our entire service for the people of Yorkshire.

“This new airbase represents a significant investment for Yorkshire Air Ambualnce and in turn, the communities we sereve. It will strengthen our service, enhance patient care and provide a modern facility designed specifically for the needs or our crew. It is only possible thanks to the continued generosity of our supporters and funders whose backing is vital to sustainting our livesaving work.”

17-year-old motorcyclist Katie’s bike collided with a car only eight miles from her house. YAA’s crew were dispatched from just five miles away, reaching Katie within minutes.

The team placed Katie into a medically induced coma at the roadside to protect her brain, before accompanying her to hospital.

We have allocated £5 million from our reserves to the Big Airbase Build; however, we need to raise a further £4 million to help construct and furnish the base.

A big thank you goes to all our supporters who have already committed funds towards the new base. However, there is still a long way to go.

Together, we can build the future of lifesaving care in Yorkshire to create something that will make a real, lasting difference.
