Increased activity for YAA during recent adverse weather

Tuesday 19 January, 2010

Charity HQ

With unpredictable weather conditions over the last few weeks, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) have seen a significant increase in incidents attended. Persisting snow and ice have resulted in their two helicopters being regularly called to attend incidents across the region.

Their two helicopters, based at Leeds Bradford Airport and Sheffield Business Park respectively, have been kept busy attending to road traffic accidents, slips, trips and falls and sledging incidents to name a few.

Paul Gowland, Director of Fundraising commented: “We’ve certainly been kept busy over the last few weeks since the persistent snow and ice hit the region! The helicopters have continued to operate, attending to the most serious life-threatening incidents as well as accidents where accessing the patient has been a problem. We have worked closely with our colleagues in the other emergency services as well as local Search and Rescue Teams and Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS). The weather has certainly had an impact on our service – we have seen an increased request to attend sledging related accidents as well as road traffic collisions. We have also worked with YAS to help access patients where a normal road ambulance or rapid response vehicle has been unable to reach the patient in their vehicles”

“We must thank the crews, pilots and dispatchers for continuing to make it to their respective bases enabling us to keep the helicopters operational during the sometimes horrific weather. Also, the charity staff have kept charity HQ running – even during the bad weather the fundraising continues. We need to raise £7,200 per day and this doesn’t halt just because it has been snowing!”

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance are an independent charity needing to raise £2.6 million every year to keep both of their helicopters in the air and saving lives. For further details of how you can help, please visit www.yaa.org.uk or call 01422 237900.
