North Yorkshire
Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s North Yorkshire Development Officer, Tony Doveston went beyond the call of duty last week when he took to the skies to raise money for the very charity he works for!!
Tony, who is 62 and lives in Harrogate, took part in a sponsored charity Skydive at Langar Airfield in Nottingham in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. He also joined 17 members of staff from Ripon Land Rover who had initially approached the charity about doing the parachute jump. After getting in touch, Tony then decided he would do the jump himself! Tony and the Ripon Land Rover team have raised nearly £10,000 for the charity as the result of their jump.
Tony commented “I initially went along to meet Glyn Norman, the organiser from Ripon Land Rover - Glyn informed me that they were going to do a parachute jump in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. I only meant to go and introduce myself; however I managed to come away having signed up to do the jump with them!
I decided to do the jump as I wanted to give something back to the charity – everyday I see the fantastic live-saving work the charity undertakes as well as meeting many lovely people throughout North Yorkshire who have gone to so much effort to raise money on our behalf. As an independent charity, we rely solely on the generosity of individuals and groups to help us raise the £7,200 each day we need to keep our live-saving helicopters in the air. I decided it was my turn to do something too.”
Tony and the Ripon Land Rover staff travelled all the way to Langar Airfield in Nottingham where they undertook a tandem charity parachute jump with the famous Red Devils Display Team which include members of the Parachute Regiment. The plane climbed to 13,500 feet where the team jumped into a freefall accelerating from 0 to 120mph in only 10 seconds, some 45 seconds later the parachute deploys before a 5 minute canopy ride back to the ground.
