14 Sea View Crescent Scarborough North Yorkshire YO11 3JE
In 2007 Tony & his family were involved in a road traffic accident on the A21 at Grantham. Tony’s wife and daughter suffered life-threatening injuries, and it was only because of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance that they were able to get to the hospital in time for the operations that saved their lives.
They decided to fundraise on behalf of the air ambulance to keep it flying so that it can carry on its vital life-saving work. Helicopters are notoriously expensive to run and the charity that does so relies solely on donations to cover the necessary £12,000 a day.
Since 2010 one of their main ways of raising money has been through the Christmas light display at their home in Scarborough. Displays like this have become more popular in the UK in recent years and as they had collected a large variety of Christmas decorations, lights and amusements, they thought it would be a great way to raise money. They decided to make it into an event every year with a proper switch on ceremony which has become a regular attraction, held at the end of November. It’s covered by Yorkshire Coast Radio’s Paddy in the Morning with an on-air countdown, who will be switching on the display at 5.30pm, hot drinks and snacks and usually, attracts around 500 people. The lights are usually switched on in the last week of November until the 2nd January, every day from 16:00 to 20:00/21:00 (depending on footfall).
Why not come and take a look?
It’s not just the switch-on ceremony that raises money. There is a collection box built into the garden wall, which over the years has collected in excess of £9000 from passers-by who come to see the lights at Christmas time. They welcome anyone passing by at any time to visit their display in Scarborough and please be prepared to stop and put some money in the box – every little helps!
Tony has also set up a Just Giving page so they can now accept donations online.
